What is Thermal Simulation?
PCB thermal simulation is an indispensable part of electronic design. It allows you to predict and resolve overheating issues during the design phase, preventing performance degradation or even failure when the product is used in the real world.
Why PCB Thermal Simulation Is Crucial
As electronic devices continue to trend toward miniaturization and higher power density, thermal management has become a major design challenge. The traditional “design–prototype–test” iteration cycle is both costly and time-consuming. Thermal simulation offers a virtual means to evaluate and optimize design solutions before manufacturing a physical prototype board.
Its core value is reflected in:
Early Problem Detection: Identify and locate hotspots and temperature-exceeding areas on the PCB during the design stage, where design modifications are least expensive.
Design Optimization: Verify the effectiveness of different layouts, thermal vias, heatsinks, and materials to find the optimal thermal solution without needing to build multiple physical prototypes.
Improved Product Reliability: Ensure that all components—especially temperature-sensitive chips—operate within their allowable temperature ranges, thereby extending the product’s service life.
What Can Thermal Simulation Analyze?
A comprehensive PCB thermal simulation models three fundamental heat transfer mechanisms:
Conduction: Heat transfer through the PCB’s FR-4 substrate, copper foils, vias, and component leads.
Convection: Heat dissipation through air (either natural convection or forced convection via fans) or liquid.
Radiation: Heat emission from high-temperature surfaces in the form of electromagnetic waves.
For high-power designs, advanced simulation tools can also couple electrical and thermal analyses to compute Joule heating effects caused by high currents, as well as analyze transient thermal responses that vary over time.
Typical Workflow
A typical workflow usually includes the following steps:
Export Design Data: Export the PCB design from ECAD tools (such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro) into common exchange formats, such as ODB++, IPC-2581, or IDF.
Import into Simulation Environment: Import the design files into the thermal simulation tool.
Set Up Simulation Parameters: Assign correct material properties (e.g., thermal conductivity) to the PCB and each component, and define boundary conditions such as ambient temperature, cooling method (natural/forced convection), and component power dissipation.
Mesh Generation and Solving: Discretize the model into a mesh and perform the numerical computation.
Results Analysis and Iteration: Examine the temperature distribution contour map to identify hotspots. Based on the results, modify the layout, add more thermal vias, or optimize the heatsink, then rerun the simulation repeatedly until the design requirements are met.
