Metal Core PCB

Metal Core PCB (MCPCB), namely metal-based printed circuit board, is a special type of circuit board that uses metal material as its core substrate. Its main characteristic is excellent heat dissipation performance, which makes it often used in electronic devices that need to handle large amounts of thermal energy.

💡 Structure & Principle: How It Works

 

An MCPCB is formed by pressing together three layers, like a heat-dissipating “sandwich”:

  • Circuit Layer (Copper Foil Layer): The top layer, used for mounting electronic components and conducting signals.

  • Dielectric Layer (Thermal Conductive Medium Layer): The middle layer and the core technology. It transfers heat generated by the circuit layer down to the metal base layer while ensuring electrical insulation.

  • Metal Base Layer: The bottom layer, usually an aluminum or copper plate. It acts like a large heatsink, quickly spreading the heat conducted downwards.

With this structure, the heat path is roughly: Component → Circuit Layer (Copper Foil) → Dielectric Layer → Metal Base Layer → External Environment (Heatsink or Air). Its thermal conductivity is far superior to traditional FR-4 boards, with heat transfer speed being 8-9 times faster.

Choosing which metal core board to use mainly depends on balancing performance and budget:

  • Aluminum Core: The most common and cost-effective choice. Aluminum offers good thermal conductivity, light weight, and moderate price, making it the first choice for most applications (especially LED lighting).

  • Copper Core: Offers stronger performance, but with higher cost and weight. Copper’s thermal conductivity (approx. 398 W/(m·K)) is far superior to aluminum’s (approx. 237 W/(m·K)), making it suitable for ultra-high power devices or those requiring extremely high heat dissipation performance.

  • Other Types: Includes special alloy cores like iron-based boards, often used in specific fields requiring precise matching of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE).

  • Excellent Heat Dissipation: This is its core value, effectively reducing component temperatures and extending device lifespan.

  • Good Dimensional Stability: Metal has a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), effectively reducing the risk of board deformation or cracking caused by temperature changes, resulting in higher reliability.

  • High Mechanical Strength: The metal base provides high rigidity, strong bending and vibration resistance, making it suitable for harsh operating environments.

  • Built-in Electromagnetic Shielding: The metal layer itself can act as an electromagnetic shield, helping to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Of course, it also has some limitations. The main drawbacks are higher cost compared to standard FR-4 boards, and increased overall thickness (approx. 2.54mm), making it less suitable for some ultra-thin and light small devices.
