What is Die Punching?

Die Punching is a processing technique that uses specially designed dies and a punching press to cut PCBs or FPCs (Flexible Printed Circuits) into desired outlines or holes through instantaneous mechanical force.

This technology is particularly suitable for high-volume production, because once the die is made, the punching speed is extremely fast and the per-unit cost is very low.

Main Application Scenarios

 

The stamping process is mainly used in the following key areas in PCB manufacturing:

  • Outline Processing: Separating individual circuit boards from a panel. This is the most common application, especially in the mass production of flexible printed circuits (FPCs).

  • Punching: Creating locating holes, mounting holes, or various shaped holes in the board.

  • Compound Processing: Using a set of compound dies to perform both punching and outline processing simultaneously, thereby improving production efficiency and positional accuracy.

Process Details and Key Points

Die Types

Based on accuracy and cost, commonly used metal steel dies are mainly divided into three grades:

  • Precision die: Accuracy ±0.05mm, expensive, used for high-end products.

  • Standard die: Accuracy ±0.10mm, best cost-performance ratio, most widely used.

  • Simple die: Accuracy ±0.20mm, slightly lower cost, used for products with low requirements.

Common Issues and Countermeasures

Quality problems are prone to occur during the punching process, such as burrs around holes, rough cross-sections, board bending (dished shape), or punched waste jumping up and clogging the die.

Key control point: The clearance between the punch and die is critical. Improper clearance is the root cause of most problems. In addition, for paper-based boards with poor rigidity, preheating (70-90°C) before punching can significantly improve the punching performance.

Currently, Die Punching is mainly used in the mass production of mature products that require high volume, stable design, and cost sensitivity, such as the mass production of FPCs for internal computer connecting cables and mobile phone antennas.

At the same time, UV laser cutting, as an emerging technology, has been widely adopted in sample prototyping, small-batch production, and high-precision FPC forming due to its advantages of requiring no die, high accuracy, no mechanical stress, and clean cut edges. It is gradually replacing a portion of the traditional stamping market.
